Unnecessary techniques for opening silicone molds

There are three ways to open silicone molds, namely brush mold (segmented mold, flat mold, three-dimensional mold), injection mold, and encapsulation mold, and these three mold opening methods are also different.

1、 Brush mold
Brush the mold layer by layer with silicone on the mother mold. Generally, brush three layers according to the mold requirements. The first layer is vacuumed on the mold, and the edges and corners are brushed in place. The second layer is covered with a piece of gauze, and the third layer is coated with silicone and then cured into shape.

First, apply a layer of release agent or spacer to the product or model to be copied. Then, take a certain amount of silicone and curing agent (preferably weighed with an electronic scale), mix evenly, and evacuate. The evacuation time should not be too long
Apply silicone on the product (note: be sure to apply evenly) and wait for 30 minutes. The gel will undergo a bonding reaction. Then, apply a second layer of silicone evenly. At this point, stick a layer of gauze or fiberglass cloth on the surface to increase strength. Then, apply a third layer of silicone and wait for it to dry before making the outer mold. The outer mold can be made of materials such as gypsum or resin.

Brushing experience: After applying a layer of silicone, it is best to wait for the silicone to crosslink before applying another layer of silicone, rather than immediately sticking gauze or fiberglass cloth. The reason is that the coating is generally thin, especially fiberglass cloth is relatively hard, which can easily make the inner layer of the mold smoother and affect the effect of the replicated product.

2、 Infusion mold
The infusion mold is suitable for replicating relatively simple and smooth products. It is surrounded by a rubber plate or glass plate, and a certain amount of silicone and curing agent are mixed evenly. The evacuated silicone is directly poured onto the product, and after the silicone is dried and formed, the product is taken out and the mold is formed.

Injection mold experience: Injection molds generally use silicone with relatively soft hardness to make the mold, which makes demolding easier and will not damage the products inside the silicone mold.

3、 Package model

The general method and material used is to surround the mold with adhesive or wooden boards around it. Once gypsum is used to fill the mold cabinet, another method is to use resin coating, where a layer of resin is applied followed by a layer of fiberglass cloth. After coating and pasting, repeat the process for two or three layers.

Mold making experience: When making a sheet mold, it is necessary to make an external mold because the mold made from the sheet mold is relatively flexible and prone to deformation. To prevent mold deformation, make an external mold.
