How to Detect Whether Dimethyl Silicone Oil Has Deteriorated?

Dimethyl silicone oil has a shelf life. If it is stored properly, sometimes even after the expiration of the shelf life, dimethyl silicone oil can still be used after passing relevant tests. However, there is another situation. If there are too many impurities in the air or it is stored improperly, dimethyl silicone oil may deteriorate. In this case, even if it has not reached the expiration date, the product cannot be used. So, how can we detect whether dimethyl silicone oil has deteriorated?
  1. Sunlight Inspection Method: On a sunny day, use a screwdriver to lift up the dimethyl silicone oil so that it forms a 45-degree angle with the horizontal plane. Then, observe the oil droplets against the sunlight. Under the sunlight, if there are no abrasive particles in the oil, it indicates that the oil is in good condition and can continue to be used. If there are too many abrasive particles, it should be replaced.
  2. Oil Drop Trace Method: Take a clean white filter paper and drop several drops of oil onto it. After the dimethyl silicone oil has seeped through, if there is black powder on the surface and it feels rough when touched by hand, it means that there are already a lot of impurities in the oil. If the oil is of good quality, there should be no powder. It should feel dry and smooth when touched by hand, and only leave a yellowish trace.
  3. Finger Rubbing Method: Rub the dimethyl silicone oil between the thumb and the index finger repeatedly. High-quality oil will give a lubricating feeling, with few abrasive particles and almost no friction. If you feel a strong sense of friction like sand grains between your fingers, it indicates that there are many impurities in the oil and it can no longer be used and should be replaced.
  4. Oil Flow Observation Method: Take two measuring cups. Fill one with the dimethyl silicone oil to be inspected and place the other empty one on the table. Lift the measuring cup filled with oil 30 - 40 centimeters above the table and tilt it to let the oil flow slowly into the empty cup. Observe the flow of the oil. High-quality oil should flow in a slender, uniform and continuous manner. If the oil flow is sometimes fast and sometimes slow, or sometimes large chunks of oil flow down, it means that the oil has deteriorated.

Once the dimethyl silicone oil has deteriorated, if it is not replaced in time, it will accelerate the wear of parts and affect their service life. Therefore, corresponding detection methods can be adopted. Xinjia would also like to suggest here that you should pay attention to the storage of dimethyl silicone oil at ordinary times to ensure its normal use.
