Functional Design of Silicone Rubber in Extreme Environments and Its Applications in Aerospace

Hits: 315 img

Aiming at the extreme space environment (high vacuum, strong radiation, alternating temperature difference), silicone rubber has developed a series of high-performance aerospace materials through molecular tailoring and composite modification.

1. Radiation-resistant Silicone Rubber

Introducing boron atoms into the main chain of silicone rubber to form Si-B bonds, and adding zinc oxide whiskers at the same time to construct a dual radiation protection mechanism of "absorption - scattering." Experiments show that this material can still maintain 80% of its tensile strength at a dose of 10⁶ Gy, making it suitable for the radiation shielding layer of spacecraft.

2. Wide Temperature Range Sealing Materials

Introducing phenyl side groups through copolymerization to reduce the glass transition temperature of silicone rubber to -120°C, and optimizing the cross-linking density at the same time to make it maintain elasticity in the range of -196°C to 300°C. This wide temperature range silicone rubber has been applied to the sealing of rocket propellant pipelines, withstanding the alternating environment of ultra-low temperature of liquid oxygen/kerosene and high temperature during combustion.

3. Space Environment Adaptable Coatings

Preparing a gradient structure coating on the surface of silicone rubber: the inner layer is polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) to resist atomic oxygen erosion, the middle layer is a carbon nanotube thermal conduction layer, and the outer layer is silver nanoparticles for anti-static purposes. This coating exhibits excellent comprehensive performance in a simulated space environment and is suitable for the protection of satellite solar panels.
