Spark plug boots are typically manufactured using liquid silicone rubber (LSR), which allows for high-precision molding (such as incorporating metal spring clamps or multi-hardness gradient designs). This process ensures material purity without by-products, avoiding gas release at high temperatures that could affect insulation performance. Some advanced products incorporate arc-resistant fillers (like alumina or aluminum hydroxide) to enhance resistance to tracking and erosion (CTI values) in humid or contaminated environments.

 

Flexibility and Ease of Installation

 

With the proliferation of technologies like direct injection and turbocharging, engine compartments have become more compact, making installation more challenging. Silicone rubber’s flexibility makes it easy to bend and fit into tight spaces, ensuring proper placement even after repeated insertions and removals without fatigue failure.

 

Safety Considerations

 

From a safety perspective, silicone rubber boots exhibit good flame retardancy and low smoke toxicity under extreme conditions (such as short circuits or overheating). They burn slowly with minimal smoke and produce virtually no toxic halogenated compounds, meeting automotive fire safety standards (e.g., FMVSS 302), thereby adding another layer of protection for passenger compartment safety.
