Causes of unpleasant odors from rubber and silicone products

The problem that many friends who have bought silicone or rubber products may encounter is that this product emits an unpleasant odor, is irritating, and may be toxic, which is very annoying. So what are the reasons for the unpleasant odor of silicone and rubber products?

Whether it is silicone products or rubber products, there are several reasons why unpleasant odors may not be exhaled:

1. Materials are fundamental: silicone rubber products may have a strong odor, and the manufacturer may have used some inferior adhesives such as recycled rubber oil; Secondly, oil (paraffin oil) is also one of the main factors. Oil with low flash point or impure composition will emit with high temperature, which is one of the main sources of taste

2. Vulcanization system: Silicone rubber uses thiazoles such as M and DM combined with TT and TRA in the curing system. The dosage of M and DM should not be too high, as too high will result in an unpleasant odor;

3. Vulcanization conditions: If the curing temperature is too high or the curing time is too long, it will lead to an increase in odor.

To pursue high vulcanization efficiency and crosslinking density, actions should be taken from the rubber and vulcanization system; Nowadays, there are quite a few high temperature applications for extruding sealing strips. Simply modifying a single raw material cannot solve the problem. Comparative experiments can be conducted to determine the material with a strong taste and then replace it.
